So were we. After running the cost of cereals, hot and cold, I could not bring myself to buy cold cereal any longer. Yet, the children were getting tired of oatmeal. I began to explore other ways to use this very healthy and very inexpensive cereal. The cost for regular hot oatmeal is $0.06 per serving. The new way I prepare it for the kids cost $0.09 per serving. Here is the recipe.
Oatmeal Cake
1 cup oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp. baking powder
Mix these well.
Add:
1 cup apple sauce
3 Tbs oil
3 Tbs honey
1/4 cup raisins, chocolate chips or berries (optional)
Mix and bake all at 350* for 30 min.
When passing all my purchases through the necessity filter, I realized I could make my own dissinfectant spray. Save your old spray bottle. Fill mostly with water, add bleach, a squirt of dish soap and (if you have it) a little lemon extract for fragrance. Does the job every time!
