What did my mother do before she had her microwave? How did she survive? I remember when we got our first one, we heated bread with butter…ooooh, that was tasty. Then we made popcorn, then branched out to heating our foods and cooking whole meals. We found ways to use it. Now I am having to find ways of not using it. Be assured, it can be done.

Our first instinct was, ‘quick, lets go buy another one.’ Until we see that the small microwaves are costing $50 new. Mine looks new, it’s only exploding when I use it! It can be fixed, but that is another story.
Today I want to focus on how to survive with out one.
1 You always have to plan ahead. This one really sucks because if you forget that you need half the day to thaw the meat, your eating out! For a couple of meals out, you might as well get the new microwave.
2. I have learned the stove is useful for reheating things. I have to wash a pot rather than a plastic dish. Who would have thought?
3. You can melt chocolate over the stove. I made an impromptu double-boiler. I took my medium size pot and filled with 2 inches of water. I then placed a metal bowl that fit nicely inside my pot. Voila! Chocolate in bowl while boiling the water in the pot worked very well. Or you can buy a double-boiler or for that matter a new microwave.
You can survive with out the microwave. It is a pain to always be thinking ahead, but thinking is cheaper.

I had never used microwave before I moved to US.
I cook a lot though we have been going out to eat a lot the last 6 months since I gone back to school.
I normally do all my cooking on weekend and freeze them in pyrex ware and take them out the night before I want to eat.
It can be tiring to cook 5-days food in one morning or afternoon esp if it is summer cos standing near the stove and oven for 2-3 hours can be exhausting.
Now I make use of slow cooking pot a lot. I prepare my husband breakfast and lunch for him to take to work. I cook rice a lot and he loves rice more than sandwich.
My self make easy recipe with slow cooker :
2 pack of ground turkey + 1 can of spaghetti sauce, 1 can of dice tomato, 1 can of kidney bean + 2 cup of wild rice.
Let it cook for 8 hours and that can serve 2 days breakfast/lunch for my hubby.
Cost = $8~$9 for 4 meals for an individual.
(I add one boil egg for the breakfast portion)
Do you think that is a reasonable cost ?
I used to be able to budget for US$20 for a week grocery bill but not anymore now. Most things have increased price. I remembered I used to buy a pack of rice (20lbs) for $3.50 , now it is $8.50. A pack of rice would last us for 2 months. We eat rice practically every meal.
Thank God, the University has adjusted husband pay according to inflation rate (that is what they say but I think the inflation rate is higher than the inflation rate that they included in his salary).
I think we only use microwave for boiling water for coffee, tea or warm milk for hot chocolate , and occasionally we use it to warm up frozen TV dinner (which is not very often), so I definitely can survive without microwave.
Jamy
Jamy, You are amazing! I would like to know what you will budget your groceries when you are finished with school.
You asked about the reasonability of your meal that cost $8-$9 for 4 meals for (one) individual? That would make one serving $2-$3 right?
A meal like that would be one meal for our whole family. I think, given the ingredients, I could make it for $6, swapping the wild rice for white. Divide that by 2 adults, 3 kids and a baby (who is now eating with us, hurray - no more baby food!) I would probably have to add $2 worth of some thing else to finish filling bellies. I think your cost for the meal is reasonable because it lasts 2 days and is a great time saver for you.
Have you tried the recipe with dry kidney beans? The last time I cooked dry beans in the slow cooker they were not finished…it might be because I did not pre-soak the beans before putting them in the cooker.
Thanks for your pointers on how to survive without a microwave oven. I like the way you melted the chocolate in a double boiler.
Although I have a microwave oven, I don’t use it much. I still use the kettle to boil water, thaw the meat in the fridge and heat my food in a pan.
However, it is always great for popping corns.
Rachael,
For some reasons, I think can bean is cheaper than dry bean.
I can buy like 39 cents per can in Save a lot. And I think dry bean costs a lot more and also more work.
John like to eat a lot of meat but I think I want to turn vegetarian (at least semi) after I finish school.
One of the thing that is cheap is tofu. A pack of tofu (from Ward supermarket and not publix) is like 89cents and it can sub with the pack of meat so that can cut down the cost a whole lot.
So 1 pack of meat + 1 sp. sauce + 1 can kidney bean + 1 can of dice tomato + 1 taufu.
$3.50 + 1 + 40cents + 80cents + 90cents = $5.60
and that is a very good deal.
What do you think ?
If we go all semi vegetarian after I finish school, I think it is going to cut down 1/2 of our grocery bill.
I had spent a whole lot of $ the last 1 year when I went back to school cos I bought as I felt I need to get things (without planning), that is so bad, sigh. But, I will change after I finish school.
I wanted to follow JJ piano school teacher to the State road local farmer to get veg and I am going to freeze them for the year. In that way, I do not even need to buy veg.
And my gf in Lakecity has deer meat all the time, she said I am more than welcome to get from her. She has 50acres wild land, a lot of deer and they live on the deer meat all years long (smoke or BBQ). So, I might save on meat that way.
Jesie,
When I got married here, I got electric kettle for my shower party because I asked for it and I regretted it so much after I have my microwave cos it takes 1 min to boil a cup of water in microwave and it takes 5 mins to boil water in kettle and I wonder if in the long run using a kettle to boil a cup of water is more expensive than using 1 minute to boil 1 cup of water.
I have packed my electric kettle in my cabinet cos I stopped using it long time ago.
That is just my thought.
Hi Jesie, I see you already understand the value of time. I am learning that lesson hard and fast. Because everyone really does have a microwave doesn’t mean they use it. I used mine a lot before it broke. Heating up leftovers, melting butter or shortening for a recipe, warming canned vegetables, cooking prepared chicken nuggets for the kids, and of course popcorn.
Having mine break was a reality check for me. I had to do more thinking ahead. I know God had taken my microwave so that I could appreciate time better and be thankful for all the gifts HE has given me. That is only one of the blessings of not having the microwave.
Hey Jamy,
Ahhh, Save a lot is a great place. Yes, then certainly you can do it cheeper than the dry. We don’t have that kind of store around. For the price of one can of beans I can get 4 times as much in dry. Yes, it does take the extra time, but I have grown accustom to the time frame. However, it costs just as much to make home made baked beans as a can of bush brand beans. I usually only make pinto, black-eye, and chick peas. Those three run cheaper for dry at my local grocery. We have also discovered we prefer the taste of the home made beans.
Why do you want to go vegetarian? Is it for the grocery bill? My sister has and is feeling pretty good. However she thinks it is because she has also cut out processed foods. That alone will make a huge improvement on any ones well being.
Why is taufu so cheap? I thought it was expensive. Enlighten me.
I hope you don’t feel too bad about spending extra while you have been in school. I used to feel bad about spending extra while I was pregnant. I needed/wanted quick meals at the beginning and end of the pregnancy. I think if I didn’t spend a little more at the grocery store to make cooking easier for me, we would have spent a whole lot more in going out to eat.
I am also amazed at how God provides vegetables and meats. It is a blessing that you are able to get venison from your friend. We love venison, but have no way to get it. Currently it is too expensive to hunt if you don’t have your own land.
Rachael,
Tofu and dry bean are very expensive in publix store.
But in store such as Ward super market ( a small grocery store near us that sell tofu for 79cents a pack which will cost $2.99 in publix and their dry bean is also very expensive.
The reasons why I wanted to turn vegetarian (at least semi) are for 2 reasons :
a. healthier (esp. after going to health care studies, I realized heart disease is the worst chronic disease here than cancer).
Red meat is really bad for our arteries !
However, package substitute meat (like soy burger, soy meat are extremely expensive here, that is not the way I am going into).
I hope to include more veg, fish, beans, tofu, mushroom, into our diet cos these are much more healthier than red meat.
The 1st 2 years after we got married, we were vegetarian. John was 170lbs kind of guy (yes, he was pretty chubby in our wedding photos) but he lost about 40lbs after 2 years on vegetable diet and has maintain since but have gone up the last few years after I gone back to school and turn into meat eater again.
It is the animal oil and fat that is bad for us. Veg, fish and tofu has lots of roughage and they are good for our artery and heart.
I might even make my own tofu eventually cos making soya bean drink and tofu were very common among Asian families (esp. Japanese and they have the lowest heart attack rate in the world).
I intend to get a soya bean drink maker in Orlando the next time when I visit my friend.
2. The second reason is the cost. That’s one of the reason I spent only $20 / week on grocery bill the first 2 years I lived here.
We were much healthier and spent less.
So, I hope to return to this eating habit after I gotten myself settle after my exam.
You can do a lot of things with tofu. There are soft and firm tofu. Firm tofu’s texture taste like meat and if you put the right seasoning, it is delicious.
I will show you a few recipes that I have created after my exam.
Love
Jamy
thank you for telling me why vegetarian. I am amazed that John used to be chubby.
I am very interested in learning how to make soya drink and tofu. How much time does it take?
Mark did nursing as you know, but he still wanted meat in our diet. He says we need the zinc. You will probably have to ask him for his reasons. We have been losing weight very slowly by eating home cooked meals. We very rarely have any thing processed. Now a burger at a fast food joint and their french fries taste nasty. I even had a chocolate candy bar that didn’t taste as good as it used to.
Rachael,
Sure, I will show you how to when I find the machine.
I am sure you can find zinc in other food group than meat.
I think one of the reasons why John was very keen to go into vegetarian then was we met a couple in our friend home who was 7days adventist. They were vegetarian because of their religion. This couple look so young though they were in their late 30’s. Their skin was so radiant , they are so fit and when they told us they have never had a cold nor pay any medical bill in their life, we were like ‘wow’ and we did it for 2 years and we were as fit as cow.
When I had my open heart surgery, one of our friends who is a dietician in VA told me to include meat in my diet cos she said protein help me to heal after surgery. I think that is one of the worst advice I had receive. I listened to her and started taking meat. And after that I forget about my vegetarian diet and I am 1/2 as healthy before I had my open heart surgery (then I had a congenital heart defect, now I am tire all the times eventhough they fix my heart).
No, meat is bad for you especially in America where they inject steroid in animals so they grow faster for the farmer to slaughter faster.
I am sure you see the girls here are getting bigger and bigger chest earlier than previous generation. It is all steroid.
No, I definitely will go vegetarian when I get out of school. There are alternative food groups than meat out there. The European (Italians, Greeks eat more whole grain , veg, fruits than us and they sure have less chronic heart disease than us, the big pharm companies want to sustain their business by providing us with blood pressure pills, cholesterol pills than having healthy diet that cost a lot cheaper than pills).
If you ask around people who are more than 60 years old, it will be a miracle if they take less than 5 meds a day.
The health condition here is pathetic, we are putting less afford in preventing but we put a lot more attention in fixing the symptom because this country is getting more and more like 3rd world where they are controlled by the big tycoon but not the middle class, sigh.
