Cold cereal is more expensive than hot cereal. I have always known this, but I did not know to what extent. I thought it was a small percentage different. Wanting to write a post about it, I did my research.
Cost per serving:
Hot Cereal
Grits: $0.04
Oatmeal: $0.06
Cold Cereal
Off brand oat cereal: $0.11
Brand name oat cereal: $0.20
Wow, I was shocked. More than 50% savings with grits. A little more than %50 savings on the oatmeal vs. off brand oat cereal.
The nutritional difference between hot oatmeal and cold oat cereal is marginal. Grits are just corn, what ever nutrition that has.
I use old fashioned oats. I cook according to the directions then add butter and 1/8 cup brown sugar per serving. My whole family likes it.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI think we are paying more for the convenience in cold processed ones. That reminds me I have to prepare some hot cereal.
Makes me want to make some oatmeal tom. morn
haha…prepare some hot cereal. Yes, it does take preparation. Thinking ahead. That is the down side. The question that nags me is, “how much am I willing to pay for convienience?”
I never like to buy any box of cereal over $2 and it’s not like the kids will get into the oatmeal and eat it all in fount of the tv like cold cereal.
